Walbro TCA Fuel Pump Kits
Walbro makes many different fuel pumps. The pumps that I sell are called Gen-II pumps. All the part numbers start with GSS. Their previous generation pumps are turbine pumps. They don't flow quite as much as the new GSS pumps, but they are a bit shorter and will fit in more applications.
Walbro only lists an OE replacement application in their catalog if it is a simple, drop-in replacement. They try to use the GSS pump whenever possible. Somethimes the GSS pump is too long for a direct replacement. In those instances, they specify the earlier pump
In some cases, if you are willing to modify your fuel pump assembly, you can fit a GSS pump into applications where the catalog lists a TCA kit. This will allow you to take advantage of the high-performance versions of the Gen-II pumps.
In many cases, the output of the pump is connected to a hard fuel line inside the tank via a short piece of fuel hose. That hard line then passes through the fuel tank cover and connects to the fuel lines. Most of the time, you can cut a short piece of that hard line in order to fit a GSS pump in the tank.
I some case, the output nipple of the fuel pump fits into a flared section of fuel line with an o-ring. About the only way to get a GSS pump on that fuel pump assembly is to cut that flared section off and use a piece of hose w/ clamps. See the Galant VR-4 page for some photos.
In a few cases, all the connections in the tank are plastic. That can make life a bit difficult, but you can still get a larger pump in the tank. Check your tank assembly before order something, so you'll have an idea of what the installation will be like.
Whatever you decide to do, DO NOT modify the hanger to lower the pickup point of the pump. The engineers designed it at a certain level. You may locate the pickup too close to the floor of the tank, and you may starve the pump and burn it up.
NOTE:
All of the vehicles listed on this page are NOT guaranteed to accept
a GSS fuel pump where a TCA kit is specified. This is just a
list of the vehicles that specify the TCA kit as an OE replacement.
If you are considering attempting to install a GSS pump in one of these
vehicles, you should remove your fuel tank assembly first to determine
if you can modify the assembly to accept the GSS pump.
